An experienced prosecutor and judge, Suzy Lopez was appointed State Attorney of the 13th Judicial Circuit by Governor Ron DeSantis in 2022. Under her leadership, Suzy Lopez restored the State Attorney Office’s focus on prosecuting crime, supporting victims, and upholding the law.
Born and raised in Hillsborough County, Suzy Lopez is a proud graduate of H. B. Plant High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College and law degree from Suffolk University.
Lopez has dedicated her career to serving the people of Hillsborough County. After law school, Lopez worked as an attorney at the 2nd District Court of Appeal. In 2005, she became an Assistant State Attorney in the 13th Judicial Circuit Court. In December of 2021, Lopez was appointed to serve as a Hillsborough County Court Judge.
The community needs to know that their State Attorney is solely focused on finding justice and making certain those guilty of committing crimes serve their time. I want crime victims to know they are supported and families to know Hillsborough County is safe for their children,” Lopez said.
Suzy Lopez is an active member of our community. She belongs to numerous legal and civic organizations. Lopez serves on the Executive Council of Safe and Sound Hillsborough. She is a Leadership Tampa alumna and member of the Junior League of Tampa. She has been involved in other organizations, including the Tampa Bay Chamber and Self Reliance, The Center for Independent Living, where she served as the Board Chair. Lopez has been an active member of her lifelong church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, having served as Junior Warden of the Vestry.
Lopez, Hillsborough’s first female State Attorney, believes that building and maintaining strong relationships with local law enforcement helps to create a safer community for all. She has implemented strategies and policies to prevent gun violence with a focus on career offenders. In the pursuit of justice, Lopez believes that crime victim advocacy should always remain in the forefront.
